PESHAWAR
Prominent urologist, Dr. Asif Malik, was critically injured in an assassination attempt in Peshawar late Tuesday night.
Police said on Wednesday, the attack took place on Circular Lane in University Town area, where unknown assailants riding in a car fired at him when he was returning from the hospital.
As a result of the firing, Dr. Malik sustained severe injuries. He was immediately shifted to his own hospital in critical condition, where he is currently receiving medical treatment. Authorities at the hospital declared an emergency to ensure urgent medical care for the injured doctor.
Police reported that three empty shells of a 30-bore pistol were recovered from the crime scene.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered at Town Police Station on the complaint of the victim’s son, Yousaf Asif.
Dr. Malik, who hails from Kohat, is a well-known medical professional and the chairman of both cardiac hospital in Hayatabad and Peshawar General Hospital Hayatabad.
Dr. Malik is also a cousin of former CCPO Malik Saad, adding further attention to the high-profile nature of the incident.
Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being collected, and special investigation teams have been formed to apprehend the suspects. Police said the case is being examined from multiple angles.
Meanwhile, the Young Doctors Association Pakistan strongly condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly act against a senior member of the medical community. In an official statement, the association expressed deep concern over the safety of healthcare professionals, stating that such incidents are creating fear and insecurity among doctors.
The association has urged the government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate action, arrest the perpetrators and ensure they are given strict punishment.
