Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) Chairman Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao on Monday condemned the arrest of Mazdoor Kisan Party President Afzal Shah Khamosh, describing it as a violation of constitutional freedoms, democratic norms and basic human rights.
In a statement issued by the QWP Secretariat in Peshawar, Mr Sherpao said that removing Mr Khamosh from an aircraft before arresting him was contrary to the spirit of the Constitution and the rule of law.
He said Mr Khamosh had consistently pursued peaceful politics and worked for the rights of the people while remaining within the constitutional and legal framework.
Calling the incident a question mark over democratic traditions, Mr Sherpao said such actions against political leaders were inconsistent with the principles of a democratic society. He demanded that Mr Khamosh be provided justice without delay and urged the authorities to take notice of what he termed an undemocratic action.
The QWP chief reiterated his party’s commitment to the supremacy of the Constitution and the protection of political freedoms, saying it would continue to oppose any measures that undermined citizens’ rights and democratic values.
