A complete shutter-down strike was observed in the historic Landikotal Bazaar of Khyber district on Wednesday as traders closed all businesses in protest against what they described as “unjust and oppressive” taxes imposed by the federal government.
The strike brought commercial activities to a standstill, with markets, shops and business centres in Landikotal,Torkham and other market places remaining closed throughout the day. The protest was organised by the local traders’ community, which said the closure was aimed at sending a strong message to the federal government over its taxation policies.
Speaking to the media, traders said they would continue their protest and struggle until the government withdrew what they termed “illegal and excessive taxes.” They rejected the federal government’s tax measures, arguing that the new levies would further burden businesses already facing severe economic challenges.
Protesters maintained that the business community in Landikotal had been hit hard by inflation, declining trade and the prolonged economic slowdown, leaving traders unable to bear additional financial pressure.
They urged the federal government to immediately review its tax policies and hold consultations with traders before introducing new taxation measures. The traders warned that if their demands were ignored, they would expand their protest movement and announce further demonstrations in coordination with business organisations across the region.
The strike remained peaceful, while local residents also expressed support for the traders’ demands.
