PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched a canal desilting and cleaning campaign across the province, allocating Rs 441.27 million for the initiative. According to official details on Tuesday, the Irrigation Department is responsible for the supervision and maintenance of a 4,000-kilometre-long canal system in the province. Under the ongoing desilting campaign, 50 percent of the canal network, around 2,000 kilometres, is being cleaned. An amount of Rs 441.27 million has been earmarked for the campaign. Out of this, Rs 285.64 million has been allocated for the repair of canal embankments, lining and other infrastructure. Meanwhile, Rs 89.63 million will be used for the rehabilitation of tube wells and lift irrigation schemes, while Rs 83.47 million has been set aside for flood protection and drainage works. Officials stated that the Irrigation Department provides water to more than 250,000 acres of agricultural land through canals, distributaries, headworks, tube wells, lift irrigation schemes and flood protection structures.
