The constitutional petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman against the increase in petroleum prices is likely to be fixed for hearing in the Federal Constitutional Court later this week after being formally assigned a case number. The court raised no objections to the petition and allotted it case number 26/6. Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman had filed the petition in June, contending that the repeated increase in petroleum prices had placed an unbearable financial burden on the public and was inconsistent with the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution.
Constitutional petitions are often objected to on the ground that the petitioner has not first approached the relevant forum. However, in this case, the Federal Constitutional Court accepted the petition without any objection and assigned it a formal number for further proceedings.
Legal experts said that following the allotment of the case number, the matter is now expected to proceed to regular hearings.
